Important Note - When reading online furnace or AC manufacturer reviews posted by consumers at the various review sites, please read them carefully and understand WHAT the consumer is complaining about.  Is it the equipment or the installation job?  That is a very important distinction to understand.  Note this fact:  ALL BRAND REVIEWS are almost evenly divided being rated both VERY positive and VERY negative with few reviews landing in the neutral zone.   

The majority of negative reviews can be traced back to a poor installation job rather than the equipment itself.  MOST major manufacturers today produce GOOD equipment.  It is then up to the service tech to install it correctly.  When installed correctly, MOST equipment made today will perform very well for a very long time.  Yes, there may be a lemon once in a great while - no manufacturer is exempt from that.  Also understand that many of the internal parts are not manufactured by the equipment producer themselves but rather are outsourced to a small handful of vendors who supply parts to ALL of the different equipment (brand) manufacturers.  Stay with the top 5 manufacturers who offer a great warranty and then select a local reputable non-franchise dealer and you'll be good.

The top 5 manufacturers according to market share are:

1. United Technologies (UT brands: Carrier, Bryant, Payne, Day & Night)  All United Technologies brands added together = 24% of market share
2. Goodman Manufacturing = 23% of market share
3. Trane 13% market share
4. Lennox 11% market share
5. Rheem 10% market share

Furnace and AC selection should be narrowed down to two primary criteria:

#1...Look only at brands that offer (at minimum) a 10 year warranty.  Don't waste time looking at any brand offering less of a warranty period.
