After Hours

When is the last time you called in the middle of the night to repair your AC?  I'm guessing never - Right?!  No one calls for AC repair if they wake up in the middle of the night and their AC isn't working.  Folks simply wait and call first thing the next morning.

The same thing should apply for your furnace too but with an exception:  If you wake up and your house has already cooled from 68 degrees down to about 40 degrees or so.  Note that for the average home, cooling off from 68 degrees to 40 degrees is somewhat unlikely for just a few hours of the furnace being out.  It might get down to 50 degrees or so in a few hours - but 50 degrees is doable for most people until morning.

No one wants to pay a lot of money for middle of the night emergency repair services.  And to be honest, an on-call tech really doesn't want to go out in the middle of the night either.   We in fact recommend not calling until morning unless you have special needs and your temperature is already at or near 40 degrees.

Here are some reasons why most companies with a fleet of trucks aggressively advertise 24 hour service as their 'service' to you - when it actually is a service to themselves to rake in big bucks.

A typical middle of the night call is so expensive because of:  1.  After hours trip charge,  2.  Premium pay for an on-call tech working after hours,  3.  The parts store is closed - but they will send someone to open up for you for a minumum $150 opening charge plus the after hours cost of parts.  If you don't have the needed part on your service truck, you have to open the store or else wait until morning,

4.   In most cases, after hours parts bought from truck stock are still being charged at the same rate as if they had to pay to open the store in the night - just because they can charge that at night and get away with it.

Do you really want to spend the middle of the night standing there watching the repairman fix your furnace and knowing it's going to be very expensive?  Go back to bed, pull up an extra blanket and call first thing in the morning - unless you're already at or approaching 40 degrees inside or have special needs.
