MY FURNACE / AC DOESN'T START UP - WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Sometimes a simple reset is all you need instead of calling the service man to come out.  Here are some simple checks you can do yourself.

For a furnace that doesn't start:

  1. Check the Thermostat to make sure it's functioning - does it need new batteries?
  2. Make sure the Thermostat setting is on the HEAT mode and the FAN is set to AUTO.
  3. Flip the electric switch off, then back on.  It's normally mounted on the side of your furnace.
  4. Check the furnace CIRCUIT BREAKER in your electric panel - flip the breaker off, then back on to reset.
  5. On older units, verify the pilot light is burning, you should be able to see the flame.  Newer units have electronic flame ignition, therefore no visible flame.
  6. If the above all check out, Call Air-Smart

For an AC that doesn't start:

  1. Check the Thermostat to make sure it's functioning - does it need batteries?
  2. Make sure the Thermostat setting is on the COOL mode and the FAN is set to AUTO.
  3. Check the AC (double) CIRCUIT BREAKER in your electric panel - flip the breaker off, then back on to reset.
  4. If flipping the AC circuit breaker doesn't do anything, wait 5 minutes and flip it to off and then back on again, this gives the compressor time to reset.
  5. If the above all check out, Call Air-Smart.
